Dusseldorf Arena

When bidding for the redevelopment of the 51,500 seat Düsseldorf Arena, Walter Bau (a leading management and construction technology group) incorporated Legion simulations into its bid. After winning the contract, our software was used to design and test an egress plan as part of the application to the local authority. The new 200 million euro stadium was located on a compact site with a tram station immediately to the south and a single exit-road to the north. Walter Bau anticipated that these constraints would cause crowd congestion problems after major events and they used Legion simulations to diagnose issues and formulate solutions before the detailed design was finalised and built. According to Senior Project Manager Herbert Hegmann, “Legion simulations significantly affected decisions about the detailed design and operational plans. Legion also steered our thinking regarding a comprehensive crowd management plan, including signage, permanent barriers and also temporary barriers and the roles of operational staff. Legion simulations also contributed to the swift approval by the local authority for the redevelopment plans...they presented their simulations to representatives of the various local authorities, including police, fire brigade, and safety officers. The realistic visual nature of the simulations was very persuasive and the local authorities approved the stadium design.”
