Legion Joins Forces with Brunel University

February 2007

Legion is partnering Brunel University in support of a PhD funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The PhD will focus on developing a parallel processing framework for pedestrian simulation and analysis.

Participation in this ambitious project reflects Legion’s desire to advance the science and technology at the heart of its software and to support user requirements. Industry trends suggest a continued move towards multiple CPU personal computers. We see the development of multi-threaded simulation software as the only way to harness the power of modern hardware. In addition, clustered (or ‘distributed’) computing is an indispensable tool for tackling simulations of ever increasing size and complexity.

Brunel University is the focus of considerable expertise in parallel processing and distributed computing. Dr Akram Khan in particular has broad research experience in the areas of experimental particle physics, developing detectors, and distributed computing. This new research project aims to combine the interests and expertise of both Legion and Brunel, leading to state-of-the-art, commercially desirable outputs.

The study team comprises:
  • PhD student: Edward Karavakis
  • Academic supervisor: Dr Akram Khan (Brunel and Stanford universities)
  • Industrial supervisor: Dr Alex Gerodimos (Legion Ltd.)
